Commerce Unlocks Agentic Checkout in AI Powered Discovery Platforms

MarTech

Commerce, the Nasdaq listed parent company of BigCommerce and Feedonomics, has announced that it is unlocking agentic checkout capabilities inside AI powered discovery environments through a new integration with PayPal. The development introduces a pilot program that allows participating merchants to offer shoppers a seamless way to complete purchases directly from AI driven channels while preserving merchant control over data and post purchase activity. PayPal unveiled these agentic commerce services on Tuesday and identified Commerce as an essential strategic partner that will help shape the first wave of intelligent buying experiences in this rapidly evolving marketplace.

Pilot merchants using BigCommerce and Feedonomics will gain a single point of connection to manage their product catalog and checkout within AI discovery platforms. The intention is to make shopping smoother by allowing customers to browse, evaluate, and buy from whichever conversational or AI interface they are already using, without the need to navigate away or reenter information. Merchants will also retain clear ownership of both their data and fulfillment flow, avoiding disruption to existing ecommerce systems.

“By combining PayPal’s trusted agentic commerce services with the power of BigCommerce and Feedonomics, we’re going to enable merchants to seamlessly reach new shoppers across AI channels,” said Sharon Gee, senior vice president of product for AI at Commerce. “This collaboration helps brands increase their visibility and conversion opportunities while giving shoppers a faster, more personalized, and secure way to discover and buy. Together, we’re advancing an open and intelligent commerce ecosystem that reduces friction, drives growth, and positions our merchants for success in the AI economy.”

Feedonomics plays a central role by transforming product information into AI compatible content. Many retailers still rely on raw or incomplete data that AI systems struggle to interpret. Feedonomics enhances and normalizes catalog entries so they can be easily understood by large language models and ranked accurately within intelligent browsing or search tools. The company ensures the data aligns with PayPal’s commerce schema while allowing merchants to choose what information they share with AI partners.

“Discovery and checkout should be one continuous experience,” Gee added. “Commerce’s integration with PayPal’s agentic commerce services removes friction so shoppers can complete their purchase the moment they’re inspired without leaving the channel. Together with PayPal, we’re redefining what it means to meet customers where they are and turning discovery into conversion.”

Earlier this year, Commerce disclosed that Feedonomics began delivering pre optimized product data to Perplexity, helping improve how brands appear in AI powered search. Additional partnerships with other large language model providers are planned as more shopping activity shifts into conversational channels. The PayPal integration now enables consumers to search, add to cart, view tax and inventory details, and complete payment entirely within third party AI environments. Order management, shipping, and returns continue to be handled in BigCommerce stores, ensuring retailers remain the merchant of record.

Pickleball Central, a BigCommerce merchant already exploring this capability, sees it as essential preparation for the future. “We know the way our customers discover products is changing rapidly, and that means we have to act now to be prepared for where our business and ecommerce overall are heading,” said Traver West, vice president of platforms and technology at Pickleball Central. “Partnering with Commerce allows us to keep our product data connected and accurate, ensuring our brand is visible and ready to reach untapped markets as AI-driven discovery expands.”

Sharon Gee believes that the shift is already underway across the retail industry. “It is not hyperbole to say agentic commerce is causing a seismic shift for the entire industry,” Gee said. “At Commerce, we are partnering with critical players in this space to deliver extensible solutions that plug into new discovery channels quickly while providing a secure, compliant and scalable infrastructure for intelligent commerce.”
