Google has expanded its AI Mode, the AI-enhanced search experience within Google Search, by adding five new languages: Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese. This marks a significant broadening of access beyond English, which was the only supported language for over six months since AI Mode’s initial launch. The expansion aims to make Google’s advanced AI search capabilities accessible to a larger global audience, particularly enabling users to ask complex questions in their preferred languages and explore the web more deeply.
Hema Budaraju, Vice President of Product Management at Google Search, emphasized that building a truly global search experience goes beyond simple translation. It requires deep understanding of local information and context, facilitated by Google’s custom version of the Gemini 2.5 AI model with advanced multimodal and reasoning capabilities. This ensures that AI Mode’s responses remain locally relevant and useful in every supported language.

Initially launched as an experimental feature for Google One AI Premium subscribers in March, AI Mode positions itself as a competitor to AI search platforms like Perplexity and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search. It leverages Google’s Gemini 2.5 model which powers multimodal input allowing users to ask questions by text, voice, or image and advanced reasoning for multifaceted queries that traditionally would require multiple searches. Recently, Google enhanced AI Mode with new agentic features that enable it to perform actions such as making restaurant reservations, with plans to expand to local service bookings and event tickets. These agentic capabilities are currently available to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. at a premium monthly price.

Google is progressively working toward making AI Mode the default search experience, as indicated by product managers, while balancing concerns around the feature’s impact on traditional web traffic. Despite criticism that AI search features might reduce website clicks, Google maintains that overall website traffic remains relatively stable.
This wider language support and ongoing feature upgrades underscore Google’s strategic commitment to expanding AI-powered search globally, improving users’ ability to obtain comprehensive, conversational answers efficiently and in culturally relevant ways.
