The IAB Tech Lab, a global leader in digital advertising technical standards, has launched the AI Content Monetization Protocols (CoMP) Working Group to develop new standards for publisher monetization in the AI-driven digital landscape. Previously called the LLM Content Ingest API, the initiative has been renamed to reflect its broader goals and expanded scope.
Anthony Katsur, CEO of IAB Tech Lab, explained that the open web is facing increasing challenges, with publishers experiencing significant declines in traffic due to AI-powered features like summaries and chatbots. He also noted that brands are concerned about their product information being taken out of context or misused. According to Katsur, the formation of this group aims to develop the essential technical foundation needed to create a more sustainable future for digital content.

The AI CoMP Working Group will focus on three primary pillars to support sustainable content monetization. Firstly, it aims to empower publishers with the ability to block unwanted bot traffic, effectively providing them with more control, akin to “a door with a lock.” Secondly, it will promote discovery mechanisms that are friendly to large language models (LLMs), allowing publishers to engage in AI experiences while fostering a viable marketplace. Lastly, the group will establish a standardized LLM Ingest API, facilitating content ingestion through an opt-in system that enables AI systems to monetize publisher content fairly.
These new protocols aim to recover lost advertising revenues while empowering publishers and brands with greater control over how their content is accessed and displayed in AI-driven environments. The framework supports diverse monetization models, including pay-per-crawl, aggregation, and outcome-based approaches, offering extensive flexibility across the digital ecosystem.

Shailley Singh, Executive Vice President and COO at IAB Tech Lab, described the current generative AI landscape as a “Wild West” in content usage. The new protocols will serve as a “zoning map,” providing publishers with tools to protect their intellectual property and unlock additional value, rather than just plugging existing loopholes.
Katsur highlighted that while deals have been made with some large publishers, many smaller and mid-tier content creators have been left out. The CoMP framework aims to include these voices and give everyone a seat at the table.
IAB Tech Lab is calling on AI innovators, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Meta, Perplexity, and Grok, along with publishers, edge cloud providers, platforms, and technology companies of all sizes, to join in shaping these protocols. Early participation from LLM developers and digital stakeholders is urged to create a sustainable marketplace that benefits creators, brands, platforms, and users.
